Certificate of Expressive Arts Therapy

The Prism Expressive Arts Collective Certificate of Expressive Arts Therapy is a cohort-based training program for mental health professionals seeking to deepen their understanding and application of Expressive Arts Therapy in clinical practice.

Our program is designed in alignment with the current International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA) educational requirements for Expressive Arts Therapy training (Category B).

Pursuing the Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (REAT) credential is entirely optional. Whether or not you choose to apply for REAT registration, you will earn a Certificate of Expressive Arts Therapy upon successful completion of the program.

The Prism Program

Earn 50+
CE credits

Creativity, accessibility, and empowerment shape the way we work. This program goes beyond a set of lectures, and invites participates to develop skills through live, experiential learning.

Program Structure

  • 50+ hours of core curriculum completed over 6 months with your cohort
    (mix of virtual and in-person training in Columbus, OH)

  • 25 hours of electives based on your areas of interest completed at your own pace

  • 25 credited hours of supervision following completion of the core curriculum

  • 200 hours of clinical practicum (direct clinical work using Expressive Arts Therapy with your own clients or groups, within your license and setting)

  • Capstone portfolio

Approaches/styles of intermodal Expressive Arts

Explore foundational philosophies, theories, and approaches to intermodal Expressive Arts Therapy, including how and why different art forms can be used to support growth and healing.

Individual Expressive Arts Therapy process

25.5 hours

Develop the knowledge and skills to facilitate Expressive Arts Therapy with individuals using an inclusive, collaborative, and trauma-informed approach.

Group Expressive Arts Therapy Process

25.5 hours

Learn principles and practices for designing and facilitating Expressive Arts Therapy in group settings, including group dynamics, experiential activities, and creating safe enough spaces.

Application of Expressive Arts Therapy

25 hours

Choose from a variety of electives to discover how Expressive Arts Therapy can be thoughtfully implemented with diverse populations, presenting issues, clinical contexts, and community settings.

Supervision

25 credited hours

Through a combination of individual and/or group supervision, participants have the opportunity to deepen their understanding, strengthen clinical decision-making, and receive guidance on the application of Expressive Arts Therapy. Participants may schedule supervision with either Prism trainer in the format and pacing that best meets their learning needs. Participants may begin accruing supervision hours following completion of the core curriculum.
*Per IEATA requirements, 1 hour of group supervision is credited as 0.5 supervision hours.

Capstone

Build a portfolio that reflects your relationship with Expressive Arts over the course of the program. Share your knowledge, skills, ethics, reflections, intentions, and philosophy of Expressive Arts Therapy to wrap up your certificate.

  • Reflective journal entries

  • Experiential artwork

  • A clinical case presentation or program proposal

  • Personal philosophy statement

Eligibility

This program is designed for licensed mental health professionals with a Master's degree in a mental health discipline. Eligible participants include:

  • Licensed Social Workers (LSW/LISW/LCSW)

  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC/LPCC)

  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT)

  • Licensed Psychologists (PhD/PsyD)

  • Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC)

  • Associate-level clinicians enrolled in a qualifying graduate program

Participants must submit a current license or graduate enrollment verification, a brief statement of clinical experience, and a description of their interest in expressive arts prior to enrollment.

Core Curriculum—$2,199.00
50+ hours of foundational training completed over 6 months with your cohort. ‍ ‍

Electives—Pay as you go
25 elective hours completed at your own pace.
Electives are priced individually.

Supervision—Pay as you go
25 hours of supervision (individual and/or group) completed at your own pace after the core curriculum modules.

Certificate participants receive reduced supervision rates as part of the program. Standard consultation rates apply outside of the certificate program.
